Kenyatta: Rerun elections will go ahead despite Odinga’s withdrawal

Kenyan President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday said a re-run of August’s nullified presidential election would go ahead as planned on Oct. 26 after opposition leader Raila Odinga said he was withdrawing from the race.

Odinga pulled out of this month’s election re-run over what he described as failure of the electoral body to carry out changes to its personnel and operations.

He added that the election scheduled for 26 October will be worse than the previous one.

It is not the first time the opposition leader had asked for changes in the electoral body, but now he says his withdrawal would give the electoral commission enough time to introduce reforms that will help deliver a more credible election.
